Moving The Elderly

Moving is something that occurs everyday. Whether you’re moving across town or across the country there are no shortage things to do. It’s an exhausting process, but when an elderly individual is involved the move takes on a whole new set of challenges.

Where they are moving to makes all the difference on how one should proceed. If you’re moving an elderly individual into an assisted living facility, there is the matter of what to do with the larger and more valuable personal effects such as furniture and memorabilia. The same problem can also arise if they are moving into a smaller home than the previous one that can’t hold all the odds and ends one acquires over the years. It essentially comes down to selling, storing, or discarding what won’t fit. It’s a time consuming process, but downsizing is a necessary part of such moves.

Garage sales and thrift stores are great ways to sell off the unwanted items and turn a profit. The little odds and ends that still have some use are best left to the thrift stores while the bigger items such as out dated electronics and worn furniture are better left to the garage sales where they are more likely to turn a greater profit. Be sure to go through everything twice to ensure that what go up for sale are items you want part with.

There are often many antiques present in an elderly person’s home. You should have all antiques appraised before a move to determine how much things should be insured for. Even with the best moving services antiques can easily be damaged during a move. It’s best to use a professional antique moving service if possible, but treating all antiques as breakables can often suffice. If you intend to store these items it’s best to pick a storage facility that deals specifically in storing antiques and valuables. Once stored, be sure to check up on those antiques to ensure they are being shown the care they need.

If the individual is living by themselves as opposed to an assisted living facility it is important to make sure their new home is safe. It’s important to check for things such as uneven flooring and other falling hazards. Things such as the number of carpeted areas vs. uncarpeted areas, the number of stairs, and hard to reach storage areas are all important when surveying a home for the elderly. The idea is to anticipate needs and adjust wherever possible.

Moving can be a daunting task in and of itself. Adding the challenges of working with an elderly individual can make a move seem like a tall order. Following these tips will go a long way to making your move a simple and safe one.

Moving Your Home Office

Moving your home office can be quite the obstacle for those moving into their new home. There are so many things to consider it’s often hard to keep it straight.  Well, when it comes to moving in Arizona we know our stuff so allow us to shed a little light on the nasty business of relocating a home office.

Shipping changes may be one of the first things considered when moving a home office. If you get regular inventory you have to consider what to do with those shipments. A good choice would be to just take in a slightly larger shipment to compensate for the time you’ll need to spend adjusting to the new office. Afterwards you can change the shipping address and stop shipments for a short while. Depending on the companies you’re working with an address change can be a bit of a mess. Some Arizona companies are more reliable than others and having plenty of stock on hand can often mean the difference between putting you business on hold for a week or a month.

It’s nearly impossible to expect to continue working during a move. You’ll more than likely need to put a hold on anything business related while you relocate your home office. Consider it a vacation of sorts. Depending on the nature of your work you may be able to work right up to the last few weeks before a move, but it’s ill advised. Especially if you’re moving from a small town like Bisbee to a bustling city like Tucson, or vise versa, where the culture shock can not only affect your business but your personal life as well. It’s better to stop work all together and inform all contacts of your move well in advance. This way your contacts aren’t jostled by a sudden change, the feeling of urgency is lessened and the transition will be smoother. You should also be sure to change the return address on anything that you mail off in the last week before your move to ensure it goes to your new address.

When packing away your office you should look at it much like packing away your house. Those things you use the least should be the first things to get packed. Records and files should be packed away well before you reach the point where your office must be shut down. Just like with moving to a new house you should always get as much accomplished in advance as possible. By packing your office away a little at a time you find you have much less to worry about when that mad dash starts during the last week of your move. These are just a few tips make sure your move in Arizona is smooth sailing.
